Date: Thursday, 10 September 2026
Kick-off: 21:00 CEST / 20:00 BST
Venue: Old Trafford, Manchester
Manchester United begin their 2026/27 UEFA Champions League campaign at Old Trafford on Thursday night when they welcome Azerbaijani champions Sabah FK.
UEFA has confirmed Manchester United vs Sabah as one of the six fixtures being played on Thursday, 10 September, with the match scheduled for 21:00 CET/CEST in UEFA's fixture listing. In Britain, that means an 8pm BST kick-off. The unusual Thursday scheduling comes because the Champions League has its own dedicated week before the Europa League and Conference League begin their league-phase campaigns.
It is a historic occasion for both clubs, but for very different reasons. United are returning to Europe's elite competition after missing out on European football altogether last season. Sabah, meanwhile, are appearing in the Champions League league phase for the first time in their short history.

Match Preview
Manchester United return to the Champions League with expectations considerably higher than those surrounding their opponents.
The club finished third in the Premier League last season under Michael Carrick, securing their return to European football after a campaign without continental competition. This is United's 26th Champions League campaign, an English record, and their first appearance in the competition since December 2023.
The immediate objective is simple: start the league phase with three points.
However, United have not made a completely convincing start domestically.
Carrick's team opened the Premier League season with a 2-0 defeat away to newly promoted Hull City. They responded impressively at Old Trafford by beating Ipswich Town 5-2, with Bruno Fernandes producing a standout attacking display, but the momentum was checked again at Everton.
United led twice at Hill Dickinson Stadium but eventually had to settle for a 2-2 draw after Ainsley Maitland-Niles scored a spectacular stoppage-time equaliser.
That result left United with four points from their first three league matches.
The scoreline against Everton does not tell the entire story. United produced several promising attacking sequences and looked capable of winning the game, but once again defensive concentration late in the match prevented them from taking all three points.
That makes Thursday's fixture particularly interesting.
Sabah are arriving at Old Trafford with considerably more momentum.
The Azerbaijani club have only existed since 2017, yet they have already won the country's top-flight title and negotiated an extraordinary Champions League qualifying campaign.
Their route to the league phase included victories over The New Saints and KuPS before they overcame Aarhus and then Hapoel Be'er Sheva in a dramatic play-off tie.
The second leg against Hapoel was especially remarkable. Sabah had lost the first meeting 2-1 and twice found themselves behind in the return match, but eventually produced a 5-2 victory after extra time to progress 6-4 on aggregate.
They subsequently continued their excellent domestic form.
Sabah beat Zira 5-0 on 5 September, meaning they entered the Manchester United game with three wins from their opening three league matches and a perfect nine points.
Their league record at that point was equally impressive defensively: eight goals scored and none conceded.
That does not mean Sabah should be expected to dominate at Old Trafford. The difference in resources, squad depth and experience is enormous. But their European qualification campaign has demonstrated that they are comfortable playing against opponents with greater individual quality.
There is another fascinating connection between the clubs.
Sabah manager Valdas Dambrauskas has a personal history with Manchester United. Before beginning his professional coaching career, the Lithuanian worked with Manchester United Soccer Schools in England. His journey eventually took him through several clubs and countries before he led Sabah to their historic Champions League qualification.
This will therefore be an unusually personal night for Dambrauskas.
Tactical Breakdown
Manchester United have generally operated from a 4-2-3-1 structure under Carrick, although the shape changes considerably when the team has possession.
Bruno Fernandes remains the central creative reference point. He is given freedom to move between midfield and attack, looking for spaces behind the opposition's midfield line.
Behind him, United can use a double-pivot to control possession and provide protection when the full-backs move forward.
The wide players are equally important.
Bryan Mbeumo gives United a direct threat from the right, while the left side has produced some particularly promising combinations involving Marcus Rashford and Luke Shaw.
Against Everton, Carrick specifically praised the understanding between Rashford and Shaw. Their ability to combine gives United a way of progressing without always having to attack through the middle.
Benjamin Sesko adds another dimension.
The Slovenian provides United with a conventional penalty-box presence, allowing the team to attack crosses and cut-backs with greater purpose. Matheus Cunha can also drop into deeper areas, which makes United's attacking structure difficult to track.
Sabah are likely to take a more conservative approach.
Dambrauskas has already demonstrated during the qualifying campaign that his team can remain compact before attacking aggressively when possession changes hands.
Their priority should be to keep the central spaces crowded and prevent Fernandes from receiving the ball freely between the lines.
If Sabah allow Fernandes time to turn, United can quickly create overloads around the penalty area.
The Azerbaijani side's best route forward will probably come through transitions.
United are expected to push their full-backs forward, particularly against a team expected to defend deep. That can leave space behind them.
Sabah will therefore look for quick passes into the channels, especially immediately after winning possession.
The battle between United's attacking full-backs and Sabah's transition players could become one of the most important tactical elements of the match.
Analysis
The statistical and squad comparison strongly favours Manchester United.
United have considerably more experience at this level and possess players accustomed to playing in high-pressure Champions League matches.
Their early Premier League results have also shown considerable attacking potential.
The 5-2 victory over Ipswich demonstrated how quickly United can turn possession into goals when their attacking players find rhythm. The Everton match produced a different type of performance, with United controlling significant periods but failing to protect their lead.
Their biggest concern is therefore not necessarily creating chances.
It is managing the game once they are ahead.
United have conceded in all three Premier League matches this season, and the late Everton equaliser exposed the danger of losing concentration during the closing stages.
Sabah present an interesting contrast.
They have scored eight goals without conceding in their opening three Azerbaijani league matches and recently produced a five-goal victory over Zira.
Their confidence is therefore extremely high.
The problem for Sabah is that defending for 90 minutes against Manchester United is a completely different challenge.
Even if Sabah successfully close the central areas, United have enough individual quality to change the point of attack. Mbeumo can attack one-versus-one situations, Rashford can stretch the defence with pace and Sesko provides a significant aerial and physical threat.
United also have home advantage.
Old Trafford is not simply another venue for Sabah. For many of their players, this will be the biggest club stadium they have ever visited in a competitive fixture.
That emotional factor can work both ways.
Sabah may initially be energised by the occasion, but United will expect to establish territorial control early and force their opponents to spend long periods defending.
There is also a scheduling consideration for Carrick.
Manchester City visit Old Trafford on Sunday, meaning United have just three days between the Champions League opener and one of the biggest matches of their domestic season.
Carrick admitted that the Thursday-to-Sunday turnaround is not ideal, although he has insisted that United must simply deal with the schedule.
That could influence the second half.
If United build a comfortable lead, Carrick may have little interest in turning the match into a high-intensity contest for the final 30 minutes.
Team News
Manchester United have several injury concerns.
Matthijs de Ligt is unavailable with a back problem, while Manuel Ugarte is recovering from knee surgery.
Carlos Baleba is dealing with an ankle problem and Amad Diallo is also sidelined with an ankle injury.
Goalkeeper Tom Heaton is unavailable because of a hamstring problem.
Marcus Rashford is the main doubt after feeling a muscular issue during the Everton match. Carrick played down the seriousness of the problem, but his availability will be monitored closely.
Luke Shaw is another player to watch.
The left-back missed Wednesday's training session after being given an additional recovery day. Carrick stressed that this was not considered an ongoing injury issue, but United's lack of senior specialist options at left-back means his status remains significant.
Mason Mount has returned to the squad and gives Carrick another midfield option.
Predicted Manchester United XI:
Lammens; Dalot, Maguire, Martinez, Mazraoui; Mainoo, Tielemans; Mbeumo, Fernandes, Cunha; Sesko.
Sabah have a considerably healthier squad picture, with no major suspension or injury crisis reported ahead of the match.
Predicted Sabah XI:
Pokatilov; Solvet, Dashdamirov, Puchacz, Zedadka; Rakhmonaliev, Isaev, Lepinjica, Parris; Mickels, Simic.
These are predicted lineups rather than confirmed teams. Official starting XIs should be checked approximately one hour before kick-off.
Key Tactical Battle
The central battle will revolve around Bruno Fernandes.
Sabah cannot allow the Portuguese midfielder to repeatedly receive possession between their midfield and defence.
If Fernandes is able to turn and face goal, United can immediately accelerate attacks through Mbeumo, Cunha and Sesko.
Sabah's defensive structure will therefore need to remain extremely compact.
At the other end, United must be careful about their full-backs.
The visitors have already demonstrated their ability to attack after turnovers during their Champions League qualifying run. If United commit too many players forward simultaneously, Sabah can attempt to exploit the spaces left behind.
The opening 20 minutes could tell us a great deal.
If United move the ball quickly and force Sabah's defensive block to shift repeatedly, gaps should eventually appear.
If Sabah can keep the game at 0-0 for a long period, however, the pressure could begin to move onto United.

- Manchester United and Sabah have never previously met in competitive football.
- Thursday's match is the first competitive fixture between an English club and Sabah.

- Sabah became the youngest club ever to reach the Champions League league phase.
- Their qualification campaign included victories over The New Saints, KuPS and Hapoel Be'er Sheva.

Prediction
Manchester United 3-0 Sabah
There is a temptation to predict an even larger Manchester United victory because of the difference in squad quality.
However, Sabah have earned considerable respect during their route into the competition.
They have already demonstrated that they can defend under pressure, respond to setbacks and remain dangerous in transition.
That should make the first half more competitive than the raw difference in reputation suggests.
United should nevertheless create enough chances to take control.
The combination of home advantage, superior individual quality, Champions League experience and attacking depth makes a Manchester United victory the overwhelmingly logical outcome.
The most important factor is whether United can avoid the defensive lapses that have already cost them points against Everton.
If they score first, Sabah will eventually have to leave more space behind their defensive block. That should give United's forwards opportunities to extend the advantage.
A clean sheet would also be valuable for Carrick.
United have conceded in each of their opening three league games, so a controlled defensive performance would provide confidence before Sunday's Manchester derby.
Final prediction: Manchester United 3-0 Sabah
Most likely first goalscorer: Benjamin Sesko
Player to watch: Bruno Fernandes
Key battle: Bruno Fernandes vs Sabah's central midfield screen
Expected match pattern: United possession, Sabah compact defending and counter-attacks
For Sabah, simply arriving at Old Trafford represents an extraordinary achievement. But Manchester United cannot afford to treat the occasion as a sightseeing trip.
Carrick has made it clear that United are returning to the Champions League to compete, not merely participate.
That should translate into a professional performance at Old Trafford.
The expectation is that Sabah will make United work for the opening goal, but once the first breakthrough arrives, the quality and depth of the home side should gradually become decisive.
Manchester United should begin their Champions League return with three points.
