Manchester United welcome Manchester City to Old Trafford for the first Manchester derby of the 2026/27 Premier League campaign, with the two clubs arriving at very different points in their early-season stories.
City have taken maximum points from their opening three league matches, while United have four points from their first three fixtures. The gap is only five points at this stage of the season, but the performances behind those results make this a particularly interesting derby.

Match Preview
There is already a clear contrast between the two Manchester clubs.
Manchester City sit at the top of the Premier League after winning all three of their opening matches. They began with a 2-1 home victory over Bournemouth, defeated Crystal Palace 4-1 away from home and then edged Coventry City 1-0 at the Etihad. Their midweek Champions League campaign also began positively, with a 2-0 victory away to Porto.
United, meanwhile, opened the league season with a disappointing 2-0 defeat at newly promoted Hull City. They responded in emphatic fashion, beating Ipswich Town 5-2 at Old Trafford, before drawing 2-2 at Everton after twice taking the lead.
The league table therefore has City on nine points and United on four heading into the derby.
Yet judging United purely by the table would miss an important part of the story.
Their attacking numbers have been considerably stronger than the four-point return suggests. Opta's analysis shows United had registered 68 shots and 7.3 expected goals after their first three league matches, both league-leading figures at that stage. They had also produced 19 shots on target, level with Manchester City.
Another xG model places United at approximately 7.4 expected goals from three matches, equivalent to around 2.46 xG per game. The same dataset gives City 5.1 xG, or 1.71 per match, although another statistical provider calculates City's total at 6.22. The difference highlights why xG figures should be treated as model-dependent rather than absolute measurements.
What is much clearer is the defensive difference.
United have conceded twice in each of their first three Premier League games. City, by comparison, have allowed only two goals in their three victories. Opta notes that United have started this campaign with an unusually high number of goals conceded, despite producing one of the division's strongest attacking records.
That makes the central question of this derby straightforward: can United's attack exploit City's defence before City's control and finishing expose the weaknesses at the other end?
Tactical Breakdown
Michael Carrick has given United a more positive attacking identity since taking permanent charge.
The team can move between shapes depending on possession, but the important feature is the relationship between Bruno Fernandes, the wide players and the striker. United have looked particularly willing to attack through the flanks and deliver balls into dangerous areas.
Bryan Mbeumo has made an immediate impact, while Fernandes remains the player capable of changing the rhythm of the game with one pass. Mbeumo has scored twice in three league appearances, while Fernandes produced a hat-trick and an assist in the 5-2 win over Ipswich.
Benjamin Sesko adds another tactical option. The Slovenian forward scored against Everton and then found the net again in United's 4-0 Champions League win over Sabah. His physical profile gives Carrick a different way of attacking City's centre-backs, particularly if United decide to use more crosses and direct deliveries.
That could be significant because United's current attacking approach has generated plenty of opportunities but has not always been matched by sufficient defensive control.
City present a different problem.
Enzo Maresca inherited a squad undergoing significant change and has already started reshaping the midfield. Elliot Anderson, Enzo Fernandez and Ayyoub Bouaddi provide a different balance from the midfield Guardiola relied upon in previous seasons.
The intention appears to be greater athleticism and transition power while retaining City's ability to control possession.
City are averaging 72 per cent possession in their opening three league matches, according to StatMuse, while averaging more than 15 shots per game. They have also produced 19 shots on target across those fixtures.
That possession will test United's defensive structure.
United cannot simply retreat for long periods. If City are allowed to circulate the ball around the edge of the penalty area without pressure, Haaland's movement becomes increasingly difficult to manage. At the same time, aggressive pressing creates space behind the first line, which United's forwards will look to attack immediately after turnovers.
This is where the derby could be decided.
United's best moments are likely to arrive when they win the ball and attack quickly. City's best route may be to force United backwards, stretch the midfield and patiently move the ball until gaps appear.
Analysis
The statistical picture makes this a fascinating contest rather than an obvious City victory.
United have created more attacking volume than their four points suggest. Their three league matches produced 21 shots against Hull, 33 against Ipswich and 14 against Everton. Their xG against Ipswich alone reached approximately 5.02 in StatMuse's match data.
The problem is that attacking dominance has not consistently translated into control.
Against Everton, United generated only 0.72 xG despite scoring twice. Everton's own xG was higher at 1.44, illustrating how the visitors could not fully control the quality of chances despite enjoying periods of possession.
City's numbers are more balanced.
Their 72 per cent possession average is accompanied by 46 shots, 19 on target and only two goals conceded from their opening three league matches. Their latest league game, however, offered United a reason for optimism: Coventry produced 1.16 xG against City despite ultimately losing 1-0. City themselves generated 2.36 xG in that match.
That suggests City are not yet an untouchable defensive unit.
Their summer transformation is another factor. Maresca has to integrate new players while replacing the influence of established figures from the Guardiola era. That process has produced three wins, but it has not always produced complete performances.
United therefore have a genuine opportunity.
Old Trafford could also matter enormously. Since Carrick returned to the United dugout in January, United have won nine of their last ten home Premier League matches, losing only once. They have scored at least twice in each of those nine victories.
City's advantage is momentum, defensive stability and the presence of Haaland.
United's advantage is the stadium, attacking volume and a recent record in this particular fixture that is better than City's.
Team News
United's biggest fitness question is Luke Shaw.
Shaw missed the Champions League victory over Sabah after Carrick decided not to risk him. The manager explained that the defender was not completely ready and that the club would assess him over the following days. His availability for the derby therefore remained the key late decision.
Marcus Rashford was also managed after picking up a minor problem against Everton. He did not play against Sabah, but the decision was described as precautionary, with Carrick wanting him fresh for the weekend.
Bruno Fernandes appeared to have a minor issue after the Sabah match, but the latest reports indicate United expect their captain to be available.
Benjamin Sesko is another important selection decision. After returning from his long-term shin problem, he has scored in consecutive appearances against Everton and Sabah, giving Carrick a strong alternative to Matheus Cunha.
For Manchester City, Nico O'Reilly is available after recovering from the back problem that ruled him out against Coventry and Porto.
However, Jérémy Doku will miss the derby. Maresca confirmed that the Belgian winger needs more time after suffering a calf problem during the August Community Shield.
City's predicted XI is therefore expected to retain the core of the side that has produced a perfect league start, with Haaland leading the attack and Cherki operating behind or around him.
Predicted Manchester United XI
Senne Lammens; Diogo Dalot, Harry Maguire, Lisandro Martinez, Luke Shaw; Kobbie Mainoo, Youri Tielemans; Bryan Mbeumo, Bruno Fernandes, Marcus Rashford; Benjamin Sesko.
Shaw's inclusion depends on his final fitness assessment. Matheus Cunha is another realistic option in the front line.
Predicted Manchester City XI
Gianluigi Donnarumma; Abdukodir Khusanov, Ruben Dias, Marc Guehi, Josko Gvardiol; Elliot Anderson, Enzo Fernandez; Rayan Cherki, Antoine Semenyo, Iliman Ndiaye; Erling Haaland.
Opta's pre-match predicted lineups selected Cunha rather than Sesko for United, while retaining Haaland as City's central attacking threat.
Head-to-Head
- United won the last Premier League meeting at Old Trafford 2-0 in January 2026, giving Carrick a winning start against City in his return to the United dugout.
- City won the reverse fixture 3-0 at the Etihad in September 2025.
- The previous Old Trafford league meeting before January ended 0-0 in April 2025, meaning City have failed to score in their last two league visits there.
- United also won 2-1 at the Etihad in December 2024, demonstrating that the derby has recently been less predictable than City's longer-term dominance might suggest.
- Across the last five competitive meetings listed by TNT Sports, United have two wins, City have one and there have been two draws.
- Erling Haaland has scored eight Premier League goals in seven appearances against United, making this one of his most productive individual fixtures.
- City have won only one of the last four Premier League meetings, while United have won two and drawn one during that sequence.
Prediction
This is one of those matches where the league table tells only half the story.
Manchester City deserve to start as favourites. They have nine points from nine, have conceded only twice, possess the division's strongest possession profile among these two teams and have Haaland arriving in excellent scoring form.
Opta's model also gives City the statistical edge, with approximately a 44.2 per cent probability of victory, compared with 31.6 per cent for United and 24.2 per cent for a draw.
But the model does not account for every feature of a derby.
United's home record under Carrick is exceptional. Their attack has produced more shots and xG than any other Premier League side after three games, while City have shown that they can concede quality chances even during victories.
The recovery schedule is another subtle advantage for City. United played their Champions League opener on Thursday, whereas City played Porto on Tuesday, giving Maresca's players additional recovery time before the derby. Carrick himself acknowledged that the scheduling was not ideal.
That could become important during the final half-hour.
United should have enough attacking quality to score, particularly if Fernandes can find Mbeumo or Rashford in transition. City, however, have enough control to create repeated situations around United's penalty area.
The decisive player could ultimately be Haaland. United's defensive record gives City reason to believe they can score more than once, while the Norwegian has already demonstrated an extraordinary record against this opponent.
FootyEnd prediction: Manchester United 2-2 Manchester City.
The draw is not the safest statistical selection, but it is the result that best reflects the competing evidence: City's stronger form and structure against United's home advantage, attacking production and recent improvement under Carrick.
A high-quality derby could therefore produce goals at both ends rather than another one-sided City performance.
If United can protect the centre of the pitch and prevent Haaland receiving clean service, they have every chance of winning. If City establish their normal possession rhythm early, however, United could spend too much of the match defending their own penalty area.
Either way, this is a derby with far more at stake than three points. For Carrick, it is another opportunity to show that United's resurgence is sustainable. For Maresca, it is the first major test of whether his new Manchester City can maintain Guardiola's standards while developing a different identity.
And at Old Trafford, those questions will be answered under the brightest possible spotlight.
