Match Preview
PSV look strong on attack having scored 24 goals from seven matches, over three goals a game, but their defensive record is less convincing with 10 goals let in, so their games have often been tighter than the scoreline suggests. Peter Bosz's men drew 3-2 away at FC Twente in their last league game meaning they could not record an unbeaten start to their domestic campaign. But it was a superb sequence of results for the home side, who beat Excelsior 2-1, Groningen 5-1, Utrecht 6-1, Ajax 3-1 and Sparta Rotterdam 4-1 in the opening weeks.
Heerenveen's record is less positive, with two wins, three draws and two defeats. But they earned a vital victory in their most recent match, when they travelled to Sparta Rotterdam and recorded a stunning 4-0 victory. They ended a sequence of one winless game, following a 0-0 draw with Telstar and defeats by PEC Zwolle and AZ Alkmaar.
The task ahead is not made any easier by the fact they are away to a PSV team who have been exceptionally clinical at home.
There is also something of a statistical anomaly between the two sides. Heerenveen have scored 11 goals from their seven league games, but they have created slightly more than their results suggest according to one current xG model, which has them with 11.1 expected goals and 9.9 expected goals against. PSV are considerably stronger, with 18.9 xG and 8.9 xGA.
Tactical Breakdown
Peter Bosz has continued to utilize a flexible 4-3-3 and 4-2-3-1 system with PSV. Their shape is quite simple: ball possession, push the full-backs up and overload the penalty area of the opponent.
The first matches of the season have demonstrated the strength of PSV in attacks with a huge share of ball possession. In the match against Fortuna Sittard, they had as many as 76% of ball possession, while against Excelsior – 59%.
However, what is interesting is that after losing the ball, PSV rarely drops back to allow the opponent to attack. This bold move allows them to immediately regain possession, but the risk is that the opponent has plenty of space behind PSV’s pressing line.
This is where Heerenveen can benefit.
Heerenveen has shown great adaptability in their system in recent matches, using 4-2-3-1, 4-4-2 and even 4-1-4-1 formations. Against teams that have a high ball possession rate, their midfielders may move in a narrower line to cover the spaces between the lines, allowing the wide players to provide cover.
Against PSV, this will be their best chance to stop the counter-attack. By manning the center, Heerenveen will limit the ability of PSV’s midfielders to operate between the lines and allow their full-backs to bomb up and down the touchline.
However, this will create excellent opportunities for PSV. The lack of cover from Heerenveen will allow the hosts to create multiple scoring chances near the penalty spot, which, considering their overall game plan, is a huge threat.
Therefore, it will be interesting to see what happens in the match after Heerenveen loses the ball, as it could lead to a goal. The full-backs of PSV may create space on the flank.
Analysis
The disparity in the statistical data between the teams is significant.
PSV average 3.43 goals per league match and concede 1.43 per game. Heerenveen average 1.57 goals and concede 1.29 per match. The xG figures show an even clearer picture. One current dataset has PSV at 2.69 expected goals per match and Heerenveen at 1.59. PSV's expected goals against is 1.27 per game and Heerenveen's is 1.41.
PSV also produce a significant volume of shots. Their overall shot average is around 21 per game and are climbing above 24 per match in their home fixtures in one current statistical model. Their home xG is listed at approximately 2.90.
That does not necessarily mean they will score three goals, as football is not that predictable and their 24 actual goals compared with approximately 18.9 xG suggests they have been finishing above the level of chances created.
However, regression is possible and even after accounting for that, PSV remain the stronger attacking team.
Heerenveen's best option is to keep the first half close. If they can thwart PSV and reach the interval level, the pressure can move onto the home side. But, if PSV score early, the match could become difficult very quickly.
Team News
The available pre-match injury information indicates that PSV have several players that need to be monitored for their availability. Adamo Nagalo is listed as out for the season and Sam Lammers, Kilian Sildillia, Alassane Pléa and Jerdy Schouten are among the players that have been reported as unavailable or doubtful.
Schouten is a particularly notable loss as his ability to protect the defence and control the first phase of possession can be important against teams that counter quickly. PSV therefore may need a slightly different midfield balance.
Heerenveen's team includes Sami Ouaissa, Dirk Proper, Mats Egbring and Mees Hilgers among the players that appear on the current injury or availability list. They are in some cases listed as day-to-day, so their final status should be checked before the kick-off.
A predicted PSV XI published ahead of the match has included Nick Olij, Lutsharel Geertruida, Yarek Gasiorowski, Armando Obispo, Ryan Flamingo, Paul Wanner, Ivan Perisic, Guus Til, Ruben van Bommel and Ricardo Pepi. Heerenveen's projected lineup has included Bernt Klaverboer, Mees Hilgers, Maas Willemsen, Sam Kersten, Mats Egbring, Dirk Proper, Milos Pantovic, Ringo Meerveld and Dylan Vente.
They are predicted lineups in lieu of confirmed teams.
Tactics to Watch
The first tactical battle will be PSV's possession against Heerenveen's defensive compactness.
If PSV can switch the ball from one flank to the other quickly enough, it will force Heerenveen's midfield to keep shifting their line of defense, which will create space.
The second battle is transition defense. PSV need to stop Heerenveen from turning successful tackles and interceptions into immediate attacks.
Heerenveen, meanwhile, need to make their first pass after winning the ball count. A rushed clearance will just give the ball back to PSV.
The third issue is finishing. PSV have already scored considerably more goals than their expected goals would imply. They have been consistant, but it's hard to sustain a high conversion rate over an entire season.
Head-to-Head
- PSV won the most recent league meeting at the Philips Stadion, beating Heerenveen 3-1 on 21 February 2026.
- The previous meeting in Eindhoven before that ended 2-1 to PSV in March 2025.
- Heerenveen did produce a surprise 1-0 home win over PSV in December 2024, showing that this matchup is not automaticly decided by league position.
- PSV famously won 8-0 away at Heerenveen in April 2024.
- The teams drew 3-3 at the Philips Stadion in May 2023, one of the more open recent meetings.
- PSV have won the last two league meetings between these clubs at the Philips Stadion.
The overall recent pattern gives PSV the clear advantage, particularly when the match is played in Eindhoven.
Prediction
PSV Eindhoven 3-1 SC Heerenveen
PSV are the deserved favourites, but I would not expect this to be a completely comfortable night for the hosts.
Heerenveen's 4-0 victory at Sparta shows that they have enough attacking quality to punish defensive mistakes. Their underlying numbers also indicate that their nine points are not built purely on luck. They have created a respectable amount of attacking value during the first seven rounds.
The problem is the opponent.
PSV are producing more than 20 shots per match, generating close to 2.7 xG per game and scoring 24 goals already. Their home attacking numbers are even stronger.
prediction PSV Eindhoven 3-1 SC Heerenveen.
PSV's attacking depth, home advantage, superior chance creation and recent head-to-head record make them the logical pick. Heerenveen can score, but keeping PSV away from the dangerous areas for 90 minutes looks like a very difficult task.
For me, that makes 3-1 a more realistic scoreline than a routine 3-0.
And if Heerenveen can survive the first 30 minutes, the match could become much more interesting than the league table suggests.
