Match Preview

There is a strange feeling around this fixture because both teams arrived at the fifth round with far less to show in the standings than their summer ambitions suggested

Tottenham have invested heavily in a new-look squad under Roberto De Zerbi, while Aston Villa entered the season as the reigning Europa League champions and are also competing in the Champions League. Yet neither side has won a Premier League match after four rounds.

Tottenham's numbers are particularly striking. They began the season with a 3-0 defeat at Brentford, lost 2-0 at home to Newcastle, then drew 0-0 at Nottingham Forest and 0-0 with Everton. That means four consecutive league matches without a goal. Sky Sports noted that it was the first time Spurs had failed to score in each of their opening four Premier League games of a season.

The underlying picture is more complicated than simply saying Spurs cannot create chances.

Against Forest, Tottenham had 59.3% possession, produced 11 shots and recorded 1.06 expected goals, but failed to put a single effort on target. Against Everton they had 61% possession, seven shots and only 0.32 xG. The problem has been the final action rather than a total inability to get into attacking areas.

The midweek Carabao Cup defeat at Liverpool offered another important clue. Tottenham lost 3-1 at Anfield, but De Zerbi's side produced 17 shots. Conor Gallagher scored, meaning Spurs finally found the net in a competitive fixture, although their league drought remains intact. De Zerbi subsequently said the team must shoot more, improve their finishing and defend better in key moments.

Villa's league story has been different but equally frustrating.

Unai Emery's side were beaten 4-0 by Brighton on the opening weekend, lost 1-0 to Arsenal, drew 0-0 away to Hull and then lost 2-1 at home to Nottingham Forest. Their one league goal came against Forest, through Alysson.

However, the Hull match is worth examining closely. Villa had 73.8% possession, 13 shots and 1.93 xG, yet could not score. That tells us Emery's team have at least shown the capacity to generate a substantial volume of attacking play when allowed to control the ball. Against Forest, though, the attacking output fell to just seven shots and 0.82 xG, while Forest produced 2.28 xG from 22 attempts.

Villa also have a little momentum from midweek. They beat Coventry City 3-1 in the Carabao Cup, with Tammy Abraham scoring twice. They also previously won 3-2 away at Club Brugge in the Champions League. Those victories do not erase their league problems, but they provide a more positive backdrop than Spurs' 3-1 defeat at Liverpool.

Tactical Breakdown

De Zerbi's Tottenham are built around possession, aggressive positioning and attempts to manipulate the opposition press. The Italian's established philosophy involves building from the back, creating numerical advantages and using an expansive structure that can become a 3-2-5 in possession. The Premier League's tactical analysis of his appointment highlighted the importance of press-baiting, wide positioning and aggressive pressing after turnovers.

That has been visible during the opening weeks of this season

Tottenham have regularly controlled the ball and tried to move opponents from side to side before attacking the gaps. The Forest match was a good example: Spurs had nearly 60% possession and ten corners, but their final decisions repeatedly let them down. De Zerbi specifically referred afterwards to missed opportunities involving Robertson's overlap, second-post runs and better decision-making around crosses.

The return of Pedro Porro should help that mechanism. Porro can provide width on the right, move inside during build-up and accelerate the circulation when Spurs need to alter the angle of attack.

Villa will offer a very different tactical problem.

Emery generally retains a 4-2-3-1 framework, but the shape changes considerably depending on possession. Villa can build with a 4-2 base, use the full-backs high and wide and create a narrow attacking structure through their midfielders and forwards. Their goal is often to tempt the opponent forward before attacking quickly through the space created beyond the first pressing line.

That could make this matchup particularly interesting.

Tottenham want Villa's first line to press so they can play through it. Villa, meanwhile, want Tottenham to overcommit and leave room for direct progression. The side that controls that battle could dictate where the match is played.

For Tottenham, the danger is sterile possession. For Villa, the danger is being forced too deep and allowing Spurs' full-backs to occupy advanced positions for long periods.

Analysis

The statistical contrast between the teams is one of the most revealing elements of this game.

Tottenham's published possession figures across their opening four league matches were 59.8% against Brentford, 58% against Newcastle, 59.3% against Nottingham Forest and 61% against Everton. In other words, they have generally had the ball.

Their xG, however, has remained modest. They posted 0.57 against Brentford, approximately 0.76 against Newcastle according to published match data, 1.06 against Forest and only 0.32 against Everton.

Villa have been more volatile. They had only 26.9% possession and 0.29 xG at Brighton, 39.2% possession and 0.33 xG against Arsenal, but then completely dominated possession at Hull with 73.8% and 1.93 xG. Against Forest they controlled 53.3% of possession but managed only 0.82 xG.

Defensively, neither side arrives with a perfect record.

Tottenham conceded 3.87 xG to Brentford in the opening game, but subsequently limited Forest to 0.92 xG and Everton to just 0.18. Villa conceded 3.77 xG at Brighton, 1.04 against Arsenal, 0.57 at Hull and 2.28 against Forest.

The home advantage therefore matters. Tottenham have struggled at their own stadium in terms of results, but they should have enough territorial control to put Villa under pressure. The bigger question is whether they can finally convert that pressure into clear chances.

Villa's route to success may be less about possession and more about transition. Tottenham's full-backs are likely to push forward, and the spaces behind them could be valuable for Nicolas Jackson, John McGinn and Villa's advancing midfielders.

Squad availability also matters.

Tottenham have received significant fitness boosts ahead of this game. De Zerbi confirmed that Pedro Porro, Sandro Tonali and James Maddison are available. However, Xavi Simons, Dejan Kulusevski, Mykhailo Mudryk and Wilson Odobert remain unavailable.

Villa's injury list is considerably longer. Marco Bizot, Pau Torres, Ian Maatsen, Brian Madjo, Leon Goretzka, Modou Kéba Cissé and Amadou Onana are unavailable, according to Emery's latest update. On the positive side, João Gomes and Matty Cash are available again.

That is important because Villa's defensive and midfield depth is being stretched at exactly the moment Emery needs stability.

Expected Lineups

Tottenham are expected to retain a 4-2-3-1, although Maddison's return creates a selection decision for De Zerbi because the midfielder is still rebuilding his match fitness.

Tottenham expected XI:
Antonín Kinský; Pedro Porro, Jan Paul van Hecke, Micky van de Ven, Andy Robertson; Rodrigo Bentancur, Sandro Tonali; Sávio, James Maddison, Omar Marmoush; Dominic Solanke.

Aston Villa expected XI:
Zion Suzuki; Matty Cash, Victor Lindelöf, Tyrone Mings, Matteo Ruggeri; Boubacar Kamara, João Gomes; John McGinn, Emiliano Buendía, George Hemmings; Nicolas Jackson.

These are projected selections rather than confirmed team sheets and remain subject to late changes. Tottenham's official update confirms the availability of Porro and Tonali, while Villa have confirmed that Cash and Gomes can return but have seven players unavailable.

Team News

Tottenham's biggest positive is that several important players are returning at the same time

Porro missed the Everton match and the Liverpool cup tie after a minor muscular problem, but De Zerbi has now declared him ready. Tonali was absent at Liverpool because of a knock and has also recovered. Maddison is available too, although the manager has stressed that he still needs to reach full physical condition after returning from injury.

Dejan Kulusevski, meanwhile, remains unavailable and is still working his way back to full fitness. Mudryk is also sidelined with an ankle injury, while Xavi Simons and Wilson Odobert remain out.

Villa are in a more difficult position from a squad-health perspective.

Maatsen's ankle injury adds another problem at full-back, while Torres is unavailable with a hamstring issue. Goretzka, Onana and Madjo are also out, as is goalkeeper Marco Bizot. Modou Kéba Cissé completes the confirmed injury list.

João Gomes returns after suspension following his red card on his Villa debut against Brighton, while Matty Cash has recovered sufficiently to return to contention.

Head-to-Head

  • Tottenham have won 80 of the 180 competitive meetings recorded between the clubs, compared with 64 Aston Villa wins and 36 draws.
  • The most recent Premier League meeting, on 3 May 2026, ended with Tottenham winning 2-1 at Villa Park.
  • Villa won the reverse Premier League fixture in October 2025, beating Spurs 2-1 in London.
  • Aston Villa also knocked Tottenham out of the FA Cup in January 2026 with a 2-1 victory.
  • Tottenham had previously beaten Villa 4-1 at home in November 2024.
  • The 2023/24 meeting in Birmingham produced one of Tottenham's biggest recent wins in the fixture, a 4-0 away victory.
  • The recent series is therefore more competitive than the overall historical record suggests, with Villa winning four of the last five meetings before Tottenham's 2-1 victory in May 2026.

Prediction

Tottenham 1-1 Aston Villa

This is one of those matches where the league table tells only part of the story.

Tottenham have home advantage, considerably more possession in their opening matches and the benefit of important players returning to the squad. Their defensive performances against Forest and Everton were also substantially better than the opening-day collapse at Brentford.

The problem remains finishing.

Until Spurs demonstrate that they can turn long spells of possession into high-quality chances, it is difficult to confidently predict a comfortable home win. Their four league matches have produced zero goals despite usually controlling the ball, and that is a problem that does not disappear simply because Villa are struggling too.

Villa's attacking output has been inconsistent, but their 1.93 xG against Hull showed that they can produce opportunities when their build-up functions correctly. Their midweek 3-1 win over Coventry, combined with the Champions League victory at Club Brugge, also gives Emery's side some attacking confidence heading into London.

The injuries make Villa harder to trust over 90 minutes, particularly with several defensive and midfield options missing. Tottenham should control enough of the game to create pressure, but Villa have the pace and transitional structure to exploit gaps when Spurs push forward.

That combination points towards a tight contest.

Tottenham are likely to have more of the ball and more sustained territory. Villa should have moments when they can attack quickly into the spaces Tottenham leave behind. One goal for each side feels more plausible than another completely goalless Spurs performance, especially with Porro, Tonali and Maddison available.

Predicted score: Tottenham Hotspur 1-1 Aston Villa.

A draw would leave both clubs still searching for their first Premier League win, but the match itself could provide a much clearer indication of whether either side is finally starting to move beyond its difficult opening month.
