Match Preview

Cagliari welcome the reigning Italian champions Inter Milan to the Unipol Domus on Sunday evening for a Serie A meeting between two sides that could hardly have asked for a better start to the new campaign.

Both clubs collected three points on the opening weekend, although they did it in very different circumstances. Cagliari travelled to Parma and returned to Sardinia with a 1-0 victory, while Inter produced an emphatic 4-1 home win against newly promoted Monza.

The result in Parma was particularly encouraging for Fabio Pisacane's side. Alessandro Romano produced th decisive moment in the 79th minute, curling a superb left-footed effort into the corner to settle a match in which Cagliari showed plenty of discipline. The visitors had 53% possession, registered 14 attempts and put five of them on target. Their expected-goals figure was around 1.0, compared with 0.78 for Parma.

Inter, meanwhile, immediately demonstrated why they remain among the leading contenders for another Scudetto. Cristian Chivu's team defeated Monza 4-1 at San Siro after Hakan Calhanoglu opened the scoring, Gustavo Varela equalised, and Piotr Zielinski, Francesco Pio Esposito and Yann Bisseck found the net after the interval.

Inter dominated possession with roughly 70% of the ball and completed close to 90% of their passes. They created 13 shots and five attempts on target, while their ability to control territory prevented Monza from building sustained pressure.

That makes a challege for Cagliari obvious. They have home advantage, confidence from their opening victory and a defensive structure capable of frustrating opponents, but Inter arrive with greater atacking depth and a considerable historical advantage in this fixture.

Tactical Breakdown

Cagliari are expected to remain flexible in their approach. Pisacane has shown that his team can operate with a back four while also adapting its shape depending on the opposition. The latest predicted line-up has Cagliari in a 4-3-2-1, with Elia Caprile in goal and a midfield built around Alessandro Romano and Hans Nicolussi Caviglia-style ball progression through the centre. Current projections place Daniel Maldini and Jacopo Fazzini behind forward Pio Mendy.

The important element for Cagliari will be compactness.

Inter are extremely comfortable moving the ball from side to side, particularly when their wing-backs push forward and the midfielders rotate into different positions. If Cagliari allow too much space between their midfield and defensive lines, Inter have enough technical quality to exploit it.

At the same time, Pisacane will not want his team simply sitting deep for 90 minutes. Cagliari recovered the ball high up the pitch 11 times against Parma, an indication that they can press aggressively at selected moments rather than defending permanently inside their own half.

Inter's usual 3-5-2 provides them with several ways to attack. The three-man defence allows the wing-backs to move high, while Nicolò Barella and Hakan Calhanoglu can dictate the rhythm from midfield. Federico Dimarco provides width on the left, while the movement of Lautaro Martinez and Pio Esposito gives the front line both experience and youthful energy.

One of the biggest tactical questions concerns Esposito. The young striker scored against Monza and impressed in his opening appearance, making him a strong candidate to retain his place alongside Lautaro. Marcus Thuram remains another option from the bench.

Cagliari therefore have to decide whether to press Inter's defenders or allow them possession and concentrate on blocking the passing lanes into midfield. The second approach could be safer, but it also risks allowing Inter to establish sustained pressure.

Analysis

There is a significant difference in squad depth, but Cagliari's opening performance suggests this will not necessarily be a one-sided contest.

The Sardinian side produced a controlled performance at Parma. Their 53% possession was accompanied by 14 shots and five attempts on target, while their expected-goals output was close to one. They did not create a huge number of clear chances, but they were efficient enough to take advantage of the opportunity that eventually arrived.

Their defensive work was equally important. Parma managed only two shots on target, and Cagliari restricted their opponents to an xG figure below 0,8 according to one statistical model.

Inter's opening match was more dominant territorially. The champions had approximately 70% possession against Monza, completed 709 passes and produced 13 shots. Their passing accuracy was around 89%, highlighting how effectively they controlled the game

However, the underlying numbers also offer Cagliari some encouragement. Different statistical providers place Inter's xG against Monza at roughly 1.05 to 1.17, despite the four goals they scored. That means the final scoreline was considerably more emphatic than the chance-quality numbers alone would suggest.

Inter's finishing was excellent, but Cagliari will take confidence from knowing that avoiding early mistakes could make this a much tighter match.

The champions also have a extraordinary recent record against their opponents. Inter have won nine of their last ten Serie A meetings with Cagliari, drawing the other, and have scored 26 goals during that sequence. They have also won each of their last six league visits to Cagliari.

Yet the timing of the match is interesting. Both clubs have three points, both have scored important early goals and both are entering the second round with confidence.

For Cagliari, the objective will be to the remain competitive for as long as possible. For Inter, the challenge is to avoid allowing the occasion or the hostile atmosphere to disrupt their rhythm.

Team News

Cagliari have no suspended players heading into the match, but they do have some injury concerns. Sky Sport currently lists Riyad Idrissi and Yael Trepy among the unavailable players.

Trepy's situation has received particular attention. The forward has been recovering away from the first-team group, while Pisacane confirmed that he has now been discharged from hospital and will continue his recovery in Arco di Trento.

Pisacane also suggested that José Luis Palomino-style defensive experience could be important, with Yerry Mina potentially returning to the starting line-up after accumulating additional training time. The coach has also considered using two forwards, meaning the final tactical decision could differ from the initially projected 4-3-2-1.

A possible Cagliari XI is

Caprile; Zé Pedro, Mina, Juan Rodríguez, Obert; Romano, Winks, Adopo; Maldini, Fazzini; Mendy.

Inter currently have no suspended players, and the latest team-news projections list no confirmed unavailable players for Chivu's squad.

The major selection question is in attack. Esposito scored in the opening match and is currently favoured to start alongside Lautaro Martinez, although Thuram is a genuine alternative. John Stones, Curtis Jones and other summer additions provide Chivu with further options from the bench. Reuters reports that Inter are expected to retain much of the winning line-up from the Monza victory.

A possible Inter XI is:

Josep Martinez; Bisseck, Akanji, Bastoni; Diouf, Barella, Calhanoglu, Zielinski, Dimarco; Esposito, Lautaro Martinez.

Head-to-Head

  • Inter have won 47 of the 90 Serie A meetings between the clubs, while Cagliari have won 14 and the other 29 ended level.
  • Inter have won nine of the last ten Serie A meetings, with one draw during that period.
  • The most recent meeting in Sardinia ended 0-2 to Inter on 27 September 2025, with Lautaro Martinez and Pio Esposito scoring.
  • Inter have won their last six Serie A away matches against Cagliari. They also kept clean sheets in each of their last three visits.
  • Inter have scored in 22 of their last 23 Serie A visits to Cagliari, producing 47 goals across those matches.
  • The clubs have already met twice in recent seasons with Inter winning 3-0 in April 2026 and 2-0 in September 2025.
  • Lautaro Martinez has an exceptional record against Cagliari, scoring 12 times in 12 Serie A appearances against them.

Prediction

Cagliari deserve considerable credit for beginning the season with a victory away from home, and their disciplined performance at Parma suggests they can make life difficult for Inter.

The home side's best route to a result is likely to involve patience. They need to prevent Inter from creating an early lead, remain compact between the lines and attack quickly when the champions' wing-backs move forward.

Inter, however, possess too many attacking options to ignore. Their ability to rotate positions in midfield, create width and introduce quality from the bench gives them an advantage as the match progresses.

The champions also have the psychological benefit of an outstanding record against Cagliari. They have won nine of the last ten league meetings and have been particularly successful on this ground.

Cagliari can make this uncomfortable, especially in the first half, but Inter's superior depth and attacking quality should eventually tell.

Prediction: Cagliari 0-2 Inter Milan

Inter should control the majority of possession and create the better opportunities, while Cagliari's compact structure could keep the scoreline respectable. A narrow first half followed by a stronger Inter performance after the break looks like the most likely scenario.
