Match Preview

Bournemouth welcome Everton to the Vitality Stadium on Saturday afternoon looking for their first Premier League points of the 2026/27 season. Everton arrive with the opposite objective after opening the campaign with a convincing victory over Crystal Palace.

The Cherries began life under new manager Marco Rose with an encouraging performance at Manchester City, but ultimately left the Etihad empty-handed after conceding twice late in the match. Bournemouth led through Marcus Tavernier before City turned the contest around in the closing stages to win 2-1.

The result ended Bournemouth's long unbeaten league run, which had stretched to 18 matches. More importantly for Rose, there were positive signs in his first competitive match. Bournemouth were competitive against one of the league's strongest sides and created enough opportunities to make the defeat feel harsh.

Everton, meanwhile, started with a 2-0 home victory against Crystal Palace. Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall opened the scoring before Thierno Barry added the second shortly after half-time. The result gave David Moyes three points and a clean sheet, although Palace actually recorded the higher expected-goals figure.

Everton then strengthened their momentum in midweek by beating Preston North End 4-0 in the EFL Cup, with Barry scoring a hat-trick. That means the Toffees have won their opening two competitive matches of the season without conceding.

The league table is obviously still in its infancy, but the contrast is already clear: Bournemouth have zero points after one match, while Everton have three.

For Bournemouth, the priority is to turn a promising performance into a result. For Everton, it is about proving that their strong opening can translate into away form as well.

Tactical Breakdown

Marco Rose's Bournemouth are expected to operate from a 4-2-3-1 structure. The idea is likely to be based around aggressive movement, quick circulation and creating opportunities for the attacking midfielders to move into dangerous spaces.

Against Manchester City, Bournemouth were able to threaten during transitions and did not simply sit deep for the entire contest. Tavernier's goal demonstrated the value of moving the ball quickly into the final third.

The major challenge against Everton will be breaking down a side that is comfortable defending without dominating possession. Everton used a 4-2-3-1 against Crystal Palace and were happy to allow Palace to have more of the ball while concentrating on protecting central areas and attacking with greater efficiency.

That approach could again be important at Bournemouth.

Everton had only 42% possession against Palace but still produced 16 shots, five of them on target. Their expected-goals total was around 1.1, while Palace's was considerably higher, yet Moyes' side won 2-0 because they were more clinical and defended their penalty area effectively.

Dewsbury-Hall is particularly important in this system. His ability to arrive from midfield gives Everton another route into the box, while Iliman Ndiaye provides the creativity and ball-carrying ability needed to turn defensive possessions into attacks.

Thierno Barry also gives Everton a different attacking option. His physical presence can occupy centre-backs, while his aerial ability makes crosses and set pieces particularly dangerous.

Bournemouth will therefore need to avoid giving Everton too many opportunities from wide areas. At the other end, Everton's defence will have to deal with Rayan, Tavernier and Justin Kluivert operating around Evanilson.

The midfield battle could ultimately determine how open this match becomes.

Analysis

The statistical picture from the opening round makes this a fascinating contest.

Bournemouth's 2-1 defeat against Manchester City came despite the hosts controlling 66% possession. City produced an xG figure of roughly 2.36 compared with Bournemouth's 0.63, but Bournemouth still managed five shots and four on target.

That suggests Bournemouth were not completely overwhelmed despite spending long periods without the ball.

Their bigger concern is what happens when opponents sustain pressure. City eventually found the breakthrough late in the game, and Rose will want his defensive structure to remain compact for the full 90 minutes.

Everton's opening performance told a different story. Palace had 58% possession and generated an xG of approximately 1.96, while Everton finished around 1.12. Yet Everton won the shot count 16-11, registered five shots on target and recorded 35 touches inside the opposition box compared with Palace's 14.

That is an important distinction. Everton were not necessarily the more dominant possession side, but they were much more efficient when they reached dangerous areas.

The Toffees also demonstrated their ability to threaten from set pieces. Barry's goal came from a delivery into the penalty area, while their defensive organisation prevented Palace from turning their possession and xG advantage into goals.

Bournemouth have another interesting statistic in their favour. They have been difficult to beat at the Vitality Stadium, going unbeaten in their last nine Premier League home matches, although only three of those games ended in victories. They have drawn six and lost two of their last 14 home league matches overall.

That makes home advantage useful, but not decisive.

Everton's away record is less encouraging. They have lost their opening away fixture in each of the last four Premier League seasons, failing to score in each of the last three. They also have only one Premier League victory in nine visits to the Vitality Stadium.

So while Everton have the stronger early-season momentum, Bournemouth have several historical and venue-based factors working in their favour.

Team News

Bournemouth have a number of fitness issues to manage.

Eli Junior Kroupi remains unavailable with a foot injury, while Amine Adli is out with a calf problem. Veljko Milosavljevic and Julian Araujo are also expected to miss the match. Julio Soler, David Brooks, Alvaro Rodriguez and Juanlu Sanchez have been listed as doubts in the latest team-news reports.

There is also an important clarification regarding Ryan Christie. Earlier reports listed him as suspended for the opening weekend, and the Premier League's official suspension list confirms that his outstanding ban was for Gameweek 1. He is therefore available for the Everton match.

Rose is expected to retain Djordje Petrovic in goal, with Alex Scott and Lewis Cook providing the midfield base. Tavernier, Kluivert and Rayan are expected to support Evanilson in attack.

Everton's injury situation is comparatively manageable. Tim Iroegbunam is ruled out with an adductor problem, while Christian Norgaard is a doubt and Hayden Hackney is also being assessed after picking up a knock.

Expected Lineups

Bournemouth: Petrovic; Smith, Antonio Silva, Hill, Truffert; Alex Scott, Cook; Tavernier, Kluivert, Rayan; Evanilson.

Everton: Pickford; Mykolenko, Branthwaite, Tarkowski, Röhl; Hackney, Armstrong; Tyrique George, Dewsbury-Hall, Ndiaye; Barry.

These are predicted lineups rather than confirmed starting XIs and could change after final fitness checks.

Head-to-Head

  • Bournemouth have won 12 of the 22 recorded meetings between the sides, with Everton winning eight and two ending level.
  • Bournemouth have won nine of their last 12 meetings with Everton across all competitions.
  • The Cherries have won more Premier League matches against Everton than against any other opponent.
  • Everton won the corresponding league fixture at Bournemouth last season, securing a 1-0 victory through a late Jack Grealish goal.
  • Everton have won only once in nine Premier League visits to the Vitality Stadium, with two draws and six defeats in those matches.
  • Bournemouth are unbeaten in their last seven Premier League home meetings with Everton, winning five and drawing two.
  • Across the broader 22-match head-to-head sample, 15 games produced at least three goals, showing that this fixture has often produced an open scoring pattern.

Prediction

This is a much closer fixture than the opening results might suggest.

Everton deserve credit for their 2-0 victory over Crystal Palace and their midweek 4-0 cup success. Their defensive organisation, set-piece threat and ability to attack efficiently make them a dangerous opponent for Bournemouth.

However, Bournemouth should be much more comfortable at the Vitality Stadium than they were at the Etihad. Rose's team showed enough against Manchester City to suggest that the opening defeat was not a sign of a poor start. The Cherries also have an excellent historical record in this fixture and have been difficult to defeat at home.

The major question is whether Bournemouth can compensate for their injury problems in the attacking areas. If Tavernier, Rayan and Kluivert can consistently find Evanilson, the hosts should create enough opportunities to test Everton's centre-backs.

Everton's route to victory is likely to involve disciplined defending followed by quick transitions. Ndiaye's ability to carry the ball and Dewsbury-Hall's movement between midfield and attack could cause problems if Bournemouth push too many players forward.

The statistics point towards a competitive game rather than a comfortable victory for either side. Bournemouth have home advantage, while Everton have the stronger momentum.

Prediction: Bournemouth 2-1 Everton

The most likely outcome is a narrow Bournemouth victory, with both sides capable of finding the net. A draw would not be surprising, but the combination of home advantage, Bournemouth's strong record in this fixture and their encouraging performance against Manchester City gives the hosts a slight edge.

The key battle may come in the final third. Everton have already shown they can be clinical, but Bournemouth should have more attacking territory at home. If Rose's side can maintain their concentration for the full match, they have a good opportunity to turn their opening-day disappointment into their first three points of the new Premier League campaign.
